It can be difficult to balance everyday responsibilities with self-care, but really – nourishing ourselves should be one of our top responsibilities too.
One way you can start working on finding time for self-care is by focusing on your nutrition. Leading a life of well-balanced and nutritious eating can help you be healthy and well. She is not only an incredible nutritionist who has helped many patients struggling with ongoing health issues, but she’s also an elite athlete. Ashley understands the role that nutrition plays in helping us lead a life of wellness and good health. Today, she’s decided to share her top five pieces of advice for leading a healthy life!
1.) Plan Ahead
Planning ahead can help you stay on track towards your health goals and avoid making mistakes. One of the most efficient ways of doing this is to meal prep. This process may take a few hours in the kitchen every week, but it saves you time during the rest of the week, ensures you’ll have what you need to stay on track with your nutrition and make it easier to stick to your health goals. All those hours saved wondering what’s for dinner and then throwing a few things in the microwave can be spent doing something else. For example – spending time with family, trying out a new hobby, or simply catching up on sleep. All those things are also important in leading a well-balanced and healthy life.
2.) Food is Fuel, Not Always Pleasure
Sure, there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself every once in a while. It can occasionally be part of a good self-care routine: allowing for balance and flexibility. However, nutrition is about nourishing your body and improving your health. It’s the best tool we have to improve the way our body works and the way we live our lives. A little bit of chocolate here and there won’t doom you to poor health but remember that the focus of food is to heal and protect our bodies.
3.) When You Eat, You Are Choosing to Live
This is all about quality. If food is fuel, then your performance will depend on what you fuel your body with. Eat better, live better. An easy way to do this is adding more fruits and veggies to your diet. Quality, variety, and amount matter here. Remember: it’s always better to pay the farmer than the pharma. Plus, good food just tastes better.
4.) Keep It Simple!
If you can’t follow a fancy meal plan menu, you can still find better alternatives. You don’t have to be Gordon Ramsey to eat healthy. Stick to some of the basics and get creative with the pairings: lean proteins, lots of fruits and veggies, healthy fats vs unhealthy fats, and drink more water. These few changes make a big difference in your nutrition!
5.) Find Joy
As with everything in life: your attitude matters! If you eat with a sad heart and a weary mind, that carries into how your body utilizes food. True health comes from a harmonic connection between mind, body, and soul. If one of these is off, the others suffer too. That’s why it’s important to nourish and take care of every part of ourselves, not just our food.
Self-care is not splurging, being selfish, or an act of egoism. It’s an act of self-love, and that’s absolutely critical in our overall health. Therefore, it’s important in our health journey. Of course, every journey does involve careful attention to nutrition, but it has to be more than that too. It has to be a lifestyle change.
Through every step of your unique journey you must have self-love. Accept where you are right now. Make peace with what your Day One looks like, then we can start making progress. The truth is you’ll probably make mistakes along the way. However, do not think these mistakes are failures. They are simply part of a long and wonderful journey. Be kind and forgiving towards yourself when these mistakes happen. Treat yourself with grace and mercy. You will get to where you’re going, but it serves no good to bully yourself there. Practice patience and discipline, and you’re sure to succeed in your health journey.
One of the things I learned during my own journey is this idea of self-love. It’s important to set boundaries, surround yourself with positive and encouraging energy, and accept yourself in every phase. Please don’t make the mistake of comparing yourself to others. Every Day One is different, everybody is different, and every journey is beautifully unique. Be kind to yourself: you’re doing great.
